The pitching matchup today has Mike Clevinger (2-1, 2.82 ERA) on the mound for Cleveland to face Sean Manaea (3-3, 4.35) of the Athletics. Clevinger is coming off a poor showing, allowing four runs in five innings. He has pitched 22.1 innings, allowing 7 earned runs with 25 strikeouts and 12 walks. His WHIP is 1.16. Manaea is coming off 7 scoreless innings against the Yankees last week. He has 45 strikeouts over 41.1 innings and a WHIP of 1.11 this season.
Cleveland has won the first two games in the series, picking up a 5-3 win on Monday and a 9-4 victory on Tuesday. The Indians are 27-23 overall and 11-13 at home while the Athletics are 22-29 overall and 7-19 on the road.
Oakland actually took a 3-0 lead over Cleveland before the Indians rallied. Trevor Bauer started slow, but ultimately went 7 innings and struck out 14 batters to get his fifth win. Sonny Gray was lit up for 7 runs in 4.2 innings of work, taking his second loss of the season. Bradley Zimmer led Cleveland at the plate with a pair of hits and four RBI while Jose Ramirez had three hits and scored two runs. Yonder Alonso had three hits and scored twice to lead Oakland.
You just can’t expect much from Oakland on the road. The Athletics haven’t been able to get much pitching away from home. While Manaea had a nice outing in his last start, he won’t be able to follow it up against Cleveland. The Indians should also get solid innings from Clevinger, who won’t need a ton of run support to win.
