The pitching matchup today has Miguel Gonzalez (6-10, 4.67 ERA) on the mound for the White Sox to face A.J. Griffin (6-3, 5.07 ERA) of the Rangers. Griffin has been somewhat hot and cold lately. He has two starts where he gave up just one run, but gave up at least four runs in four of his last six starts. Griffin has 46 strikeouts with 18 walks this season and a 1.22 WHIP. Gonzalez has looked solid in his last two outings, allowing two runs over 14 innings. He has 65 strikeouts with 41 walks and a 1.48 WHIP.
This is the fourth meeting of the weekend between these two. Texas has won two of the three, picking up a 9-8 win on Thursday and a 17-7 win on Saturday. Chicago picked up a 4-3 win on Friday. The Sox are 46-74 overall and 21-43 on the road while the Rangers are 61-61 overall and 35-28 at home.
On Saturday, the Rangers hammered the Sox for 17 runs on 20 hits. Rougned Odor had two home runs and five RBI while Mike Napoli had his 26th home run and also drove in five runs. Shin-Soo Choo had four hits and three RBI as well. Chicago was led by Jose Abreu, who had four hits, including a triple and his 24th home run. Martin Perez got his eighth win despite allowing six runs in six innings. Derek Holland went just 2.2 innings and allowed seven runs to take his 13th loss of the season.
The White Sox have been competitive in this series, especially at the plate. They just haven’t really had the pitching to hang with Texas. That could change today. Gonzalez is coming in on a roll and has shown he has the stuff to compete today. Griffin hasn’t been at his best and that could lead to Chicago staying hot at the plate. I think, given the long odds, the White Sox are the smarter play today.
