The pitching matchup for today’s game has Martin Perez (5-9, 5.13 ERA) on the mound for Texas to face Bartolo Colon (0-1, 5.87) of the Twins. Perez has been struggling as of late, allowing at least three runs in eight of his last 10 starts. Perez has 74 strikeouts with 42 walks this season and a 1.64 WHIP. Colon hasn’t been too good in his three starts with the Twins. He has pitched 15.1 innings and allowed 10 earned runs with six strikeouts and one walk. On the year, Colon has a 7.70 ERA and 1.75 WHIP.
These two opened their series on Thursday, with Texas earning a 4-1 win in the opener. The two have split their four meetings on the year. Texas now stands 52-56 overall and 24-30 on the road while the Twins are 51-55 overall and 23-32 at home.
The Rangers managed a 4-1 win on Thursday thanks to its pitching. A.J. Griffin went six innings and allowed just one run on two hits to get his fifth win while his bullpen pitched three innings of 1-hit ball. Adalberto Mejia gave up four runs in four innings to fall to 4-5 on the year. Joey Gallo had his 29th home run of the season to lead the Rangers. He finished with three RBI. Elvis Andrus had a pair of hits in the win as well. The Twins were held to just three hits in the game. Byron Buxton had a double and drove in the lone run.
The Twins just can’t seem to figure things out. Their record at home is shockingly bad. Tonight they send Colon to the mound, who hasn’t looked good in a Minnesota uniform. Texas has Perez pitching tonight, who hasn’t been good, but the Texas lineup seems a little more reliable right now. The Rangers have stronger hitters and more power in their bats than the Twins. I think that will be the difference today.
