Today’s pitching matchup features Nick Martinez (3-4, 5.07 ERA) on the mound for the Rangers to face Jose Berrios (9-5, 3.57) of the Twins. Martinez was lit up for seven runs in 5.1 innings in his last start against the Mariners. He now has 38 strikeouts with 21 walks and a 1.35 WHIP this season. Berrios has been pretty solid as of late, allowing just one run in two of his last three starts. He has 82 strikeouts this season with 27 walks. His WHIP on the year is just 1.15.
The Rangers have won two of the three meetings in this weekend series. Texas picked up a 4-1 win on Thursday and Saturday while the Twins had an 8-4 victory on Friday. The Rangers are now 53-57 overall and 25-31 on the road while the Twins are 52-56 overall and 24-33 at home.
Texas jumped out to a quick lead on Saturday night and then Cole Hamels shut the door on the Twins making a comeback. Hamels pitched the complete game in just 96 pitches, allowing one unearned run on four hits with five strikeouts. He improved to 6-1 with the win. Kyle Gibson took his ninth loss of 2017 by allowing three runs in 5.1 innings of work. Nomar Mazara and Robinson Chirinos each drove in a pair of runs in the win. Mazara had his 14th home run of the season as well. Ehire Adrianza had the lone RBI for the Twins in the loss.
This weekend has been about pitching for Texas. The Rangers picked up wins when their starters were on point. In Friday’s loss, they couldn’t keep an average Minnesota team in check. I don’t think Martinez is going to have a lockdown performance today. He hasn’t shown that ability most of the season and really looked bad against the Mariners earlier in the week. Berrios has been one of Minnesota’s more reliable arms and I expect him to give the Twins a nice boost on the mound and lead them to a win at home.
