He matched a season-high with 13 punch-outs while throwing 85 of his 118 pitches for strikes. Sale was in line for his 12th win of the year but Craig Kimbrel blew a one-run lead in the ninth as the Red Sox went on to lose in 16 innings. Just as he has all season, Sale was in complete control, commanding his pitches like a maestro. The Cy Young frontrunner will be on display again Thursday versus Toronto.
Nolasco allowed just one run and two hits over seven innings Friday versus the Rays. Nolasco might be mediocre, but his results never seem to be; he’s allowed two, five, five, zero, zero, eight and one runs in his last seven starts. In 19 starts this season, he’s allowed three or four runs just four times. Overall, though, he’s 4-10 with a 4.82 ERA.
