The pitching matchup on Sunday has Jason Hammel (4-8, 4.81 ERA) on the mound for Kansas City to face Drew Pomeranz (10-4, 3.59) of the Red Sox. Pomeranz has been pretty respectable this season, racking up 115 strikeouts with 43 walks and a 1.36 WHIP. Hammel has allowed at least three runs in four of his last five starts. On the year, Hammel has 87 strikeouts with 36 walks and a 1.42 WHIP.
Kansas City won the series opener on Friday, 4-2. Boston bounced back on Saturday with a 9-8 win in 10 winnings. The Sox are now 57-48 overall and 30-19 at home while the Royals are 54-48 overall and 24-25 on the road.
Boston picked up the win in the 10th on a RBI groundout from Eduardo Nunez. It was his third RBI of the game. The Sox actually had their last three runs recorded on outs. Christian Vazquez finished the game with three hits and two RBI for the Sox as well. Kansas City was led by Lorenzo Cain, who had a home run and three RBI. Whit Merrifield added four hits and two RBI.
I don’t feel good about the Royals today. Hammel has been struggling as of late and now goes on the road to face a good Boston lineup. Pomeranz has been pretty steady and avoid the really poor start. Against a Kansas City lineup that can get cold early, I think he should be able to produce another great start.
