The pitching matchup tonight has Jose Quintana (4-8, 4.45 ERA) on the mound for Chicago to face Jeff Hoffman (5-1, 4.01) of the Rockies. Quintana has been one of Chicago’s better pitchers in recent weeks. He has allowed just three earned runs over his last three starts. He has 99 strikeouts and 38 walks on the season with 1.32 WHIP. Hoffman has struggled lately, allowing 14 earned runs over his last three starts. He has 48 strikeouts and 14 walks this season with a 1.14 WHIP.
These two opened their series on Friday, with the Rockies picking up a 12-4 win. Colorado is now 51-38 overall with the win and 26-21 on the road. Chicago is 37-48 overall and 18-30 on the road.
The Rockies had no trouble in Friday’s win, racking up 17 hits in the win. They lit up Derek Holland for seven runs in just four innings. The major run support allowed German Marquez to get his sixth win of the year. He pitched seven innings and allowed just three runs. Nolan Arenado had a big day at the plate, racking up three hits and five RBI. Charlie Blackmon added his 19th home run of the season and scored three runs. Jose Abreu had three hits for the White Sox in the loss.
The Rockies hammered Chicago on Friday and I would expect more of the same today. Quintana hasn’t been pitching badly as of late, but this is a tough lineup to get past, especially in Colorado. The White Sox have some talent at the plate as well, but they have been very inconsistent. Hoffman isn’t the best pitcher, but he is likely to get more run support than Quintana.
