The pitching matchup today has Marco Estrada (4-6, 5.17 ERA) on the mound for Toronto to face Anibal Sanchez (1-0, 5.89) of the Tigers. Estrada struggled entering the break. He allowed six runs in three of his last five starts and at least three runs in six of his last seven. He has 110 strikeouts with 39 walks this season and a 1.44 WHIP. Sanchez is set to make his fifth start. His four starts haven’t been anything like his relief appearances. He has allowed eight earned runs over 23.1 innings in his four starts. His ERA since moving to the rotation went from 9.00 to 5.89. He has 44 strikeouts with 13 walks this season and a 1.42 WHIP.
These two have split the first two games of the series, with the Blue Jays earning a 7-2 win on Friday and the Tigers bouncing back with an 11-1 win on Saturday night. Detroit is now 40-49 overall and 24-21 at home while Toronto is 42-48 overall and 20-24 on the road.
The Tigers got another great start from Michael Fulmer on Saturday, as he went eight innings and allowed just one run on two hits. He improved to 10-6 with the win. Francisco Liriano lasted just two innings and gave up five runs for the Jays. The Tigers were led by J.D. Martinez, who had three hits with five RBI, including his 15th home run of the season. Miguel Cabrera had three hits, two RBI and his 12th home run while Jose Iglesias had three hits and a RBI.
The Tigers got a big break on Saturday when Fulmer was able to go eight innings. That sets up their bullpen nicely for today. Their bullpen isn’t good, but they can throw their best arms in a close game, which I think this will be. Sanchez has been very competitive in his starts. This game should come down to the Detroit hitters. The Tigers have the ability to light pitchers up, as they showed on Saturday. Estrada hasn’t been a reliable pitcher for Toronto, so look for the Tigers to pile on some early runs.
