The pitching matchup tonight has Anibal Sanchez (0-0, 9.00 ERA) on the mound for Detroit to face Sam Gaviglio (3-1, 3.41) of the Mariners. Gaviglio is making his seventh start of 2017. He has had a pair of shaky outings, but has been largely good for the Mariners. He has allowed 13 earned runs over 34.1 innings of work with 24 strikeouts and eight walks. His WHIP is 1.17. Sanchez has been a mess all year as a reliever. He wasn’t good enough to earn a spot in the rotation and was sent to the pen, but it hasn’t worked out well. He has given up 21 earned runs over 21 innings and has 22 strikeouts with nine walks. His WHIP is 2.05.
The Tigers are coming off a home four-game split with the Rays and they are just 3-7 in their last 10 games. Detroit is now 32-36 overall and 14-20 on the road. The Tigers are putting up 4.85 runs per game while allowing 4.99 per contest. Detroit is being led by Alex Avila, who is hitting .326 with 10 home runs and 27 RBI. J.D. Martinez is adding 11 home runs and 26 RBI in just 34 games.
Seattle is coming off a series loss to the Rangers in Texas this weekend. They are just 4-6 in their last 10 games. The Mariners are 34-37 on the season and 20-13 at home this season. Seattle is averaging 4.76 runs per game while allowing 4.93 per contest. Seattle is being led by Nelson Cruz, who has 14 home runs and 53 RBI. Robinson Cano is adding 11 home runs and 40 RBI.
The Tigers can’t expect much from Sanchez. When he gets into a few innings, things seem to fall apart. If he can’t pitch deep into the game, Detroit has to turn to its awful bullpen. Seattle should be able to have a field day at the plate, especially the Cano-Cruz combo. Detroit has been falling flat at the plate in their recent losses, so don’t expect it to do much damage to Gaviglio after flying across the country.
