The pitching matchup tonight has Kevin Gausman (8-7, 5.37 ERA) on the mound for Baltimore to face Justin Verlander (6-7, 4.29) of the Tigers. Verlander has been showing improvement in recent starts, allowing two earned runs or less in four of his last five outings. He has 126 strikeouts and 60 walks this season to go with a 1.44 WHIP. Gausman has allowed just one earned run over his last three starts, a total of 20.2 innings. He has 112 strikeouts this season to go with 52 walks and a 1.68 WHIP.
Detroit opened this series with a 7-5 win on Thursday night. The Tigers have now taken three of four meetings with Baltimore this season. Detroit stands 50-57 on the season and 23-32 on the road while the Orioles are 53-55 overall and 33-22 at home.
Thursday saw the Tigers post their seven runs by the third inning to take a 7-0 lead and just hold on from there. Chris Tillman had another poor outing, allowing the seven runs in just two innings of work to fall to 1-7 on the season. Matthew Boyd lasted only 4.1 innings for the Tigers, so he didn’t get the decision. He allowed three runs on five hits. Justin Upton had his 19th home run of the season and drove in two to lead the Tigers while Ian Kinsler also homered and Miguel Cabrera drove in two runs. The Orioles were led by Tim Beckham, who had three hits.
Though the season numbers don’t show it, this could be a pretty good pitching matchup. Gausman has been on a tear lately while Verlander has shown flashes that he’s still capable of a good outing. The Tigers seem to be clicking at the plate a little bit with some new, younger faces in the lineup. I think they can find a way to break Gausman’s hot streak. Verlander has the longer history of success on the mound, so I still trust him over a three-start hot streak for a pitcher that was a mess before that.
