The pitching matchup today features Dillon Gee (1-0, 2.84 ERA) on the mound for the Twins to face Marco Estrada (5-8, 5.07) of the Blue Jays. Gee has appeared in five games for the Twins, allowing four runs over 18.2 innings with 16 strikeouts and two walks. On the season, Gee has a 1.20 WHIP. Estrada has been struggling as of late, allowing nine runs over his last 10.1 innings. Estrada has 147 strikeouts on the season with 61 walks and a 1.44 WHIP.
These two opened the weekend series on Friday and Minnesota picked up a 6-1 victory. The Twins are now 66-62 overall and 35-27 on the road. Toronto is 60-68 overall and 34-30 at home.
Friday’s game saw the Blue Jays strand 11 baserunners as they had 10 hits, but had just one run. Bartolo Colon managed to go 6.2 innings and allow just the one run despite giving up nine hits. J.A. Happ took the loss by giving up five runs over six innings. Jorge Polanco and Byron Buxton each had three hits and two RBI to lead the Twins in the win. Justin Smoak had three hits for the Jays, including his 35th home run of the season.
The Twins got a big boost from Colon on Friday, which was surprising to see. Minnesota also did well at the plate against Happ. The Twins should be able to carry that over into today’s game, as Estrada has been getting beat up lately. Gee doesn’t have a lot of experience, but his pitching this season has been solid. I think he can keep Toronto in check today and help the Twins earn another upset.
