The pitching matchup today has Derek Holland (7-13, 6.05 ERA) on the mound for the White Sox to face Jose Berrios (11-6, 4.04) of the Twins. Berrios has been working backwards for the most part in recent weeks, allowing five runs or more in three of his last four starts. He has 104 strikeouts with 34 walks this season, as well as a 1.16 WHIP. Holland is coming off one of his better starts, allowing just one run in six innings against the Twins last week. Holland has 99 strikeouts with 70 walks this season and a 1.68 WHIP.
These two opened their series on Tuesday. Minnesota picked up a 6-4 win while the two hit the over of 9 runs. The Twins are now 68-63 overall, 32-25 at home and 64-58 with the under. Chicago is 52-78 overall, 22-44 on the road and 64-61 with the under.
Ervin Santana earned the win on Tuesday, but still allowed three runs over 6.2 innings of play. He is now 14-7 on the season. James Shields fell to 2-5 on the year after allowing four runs in five innings of work. Both Jorge Polanco and Eduardo Escobar each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Twins on Tuesday. Chicago was led at the plate by Jose Abreu, who had four hits and two RBI.
Holland had a good start against the Twins last week, but prior to that he allowed three runs in one inning to Minnesota in relief work. Holland hasn’t shown the consistency on the mound that you can expect a repeat performance of his last start today. Berrios has had flashes of good stuff this year, but has been in a funk over recent weeks. I expect both pitchers to struggle again today and for the two teams to get to 10 runs.
