From Rotoworld: Athletics pitching prospect Daniel Gossett will make his major league debut Wednesday in Miami. He’ll have gone eight days in between starts, but Gossett will make up for it with a longer-than-normal between-starts bullpen session. The right-hander has posted a 3.41 ERA and 54/19 K/BB ratio over 60 2/3 innings at Triple-A Nashville this season. It’s expected to be just a spot start.
Volquez failed to throw back-to-back no-hitters, settling for seven shutout innings in the Marlins’ 7-1 win over the Pirates on Thursday. Volquez got the suspense out of the way early, allowing a single to the second batter he faced. He didn’t make it a habit, though, yielding just three hits all night while walking two and striking out eight. After going winless through his first nine starts, the right-hander is now 3-0 in his last three turns, allowing one run over those 22 innings. He’s now 3-7 with a 3.41 ERA ahead of an interleague matchup with the Athletics on Wednesday.

OUR PREDICTION: Volquez backed up his no-hitter with another solid outing against the Pirates. In his last two starts, he has struck out 18 batters while allowing three hits and zero earned runs. He’ll come back down to earth at some point but pitchers can be streaky and Volquez is in the middle of a hot streak. With Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna and Dee Gordon facing a rookie in Gossett who is making his major league debut, I’m not going to over-think this one.
