Snell (0-1) threw 6 2/3 innings in last Thursday’s loss to the Blue Jays, giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits to go with five walks and five strikeouts. Most of the damage against Snell came off the bat of Kendrys Morales, who hit a grand slam in the contest. Snell struggled with his control for most of the game, with 57 of his 97 pitches going for strikes.
Montgomery beat out Chad Green for the fifth spot in the Yankees’ rotation. New York wasn’t expected to use a fifth starter until April 16, but Montgomery will be handed the ball earlier than expected because Joe Girardi wants to give Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia an extra day of rest.
