MLB FREE PICK: Take Baltimore. According to latest MLB trends, Boston is: 4-13 in Lackey’s last 17 road starts with a total of 9.0-10.5 and 8-23 last 31 road games vs. a team with a winning record. Baltimore is: 21-7 last 28 in series, 5-0 last 5 at home in series and 8-1 last 9 home games with a total set of 9.0-10.5.
This would definitely not be considered a pitcher’s duel on paper. Lackey has had a comeback season but he has struggled on the road in three of his last four starts. On June 10, he was rocked at Tampa Bay, giving up two home runs and four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings but the Red Sox beat the Rays, 10-8. He also allowed eight runs in his last start against Baltimore, although that was in September of 2011. Baltimore is already up 2-0 in this series and 4-1 this year. It helps to have All-Star caliber players in Adam Jones and 3B Manny Machado. But it’s 1B Chris Davis who is playing like an MVP. Davis hit his 22nd home run on Friday night to lead Baltimore to a 2-0 win and to lead the majors in home runs. The Orioles have also received some good pitching as of late, They’ve allowed four or less runs in four of their last five starts. Boston has scored just nine runs in their last four games as they’ve struggled on the road. Not having 1B Mike Napoli (illness) hasn’t helped as he’s a solid slugger who can protect David Ortiz. Boston has a .167 average with 11 runs over their last five games at Camden Yards-a hitter’s ballpark. Garcia wins another for the streaking Orioles, who gets help from Davis, Jones and Machado.
