MLB FREE PICK: Take the under. According to latest MLB trends, Boston is: 0-8-1 last 9 under, 1-8-1 last 10 under vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. Detroit is 1-5 under last 6 vs. AL East, 2-9 last 11 under overall and 7-21 under last 28 on during game 3 of a series.
Allen Webster (0-1, 11.74 ERA) is making just his third start of the season. He pitched well in his first start, allowing just two runs in six innings against Kansas City on April 21. But he struggled against Minnesota on May 8, allowing 8 runs on 1 2/3 innings. He went back to the minors and pitched well, going 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA in 10 starts for AAA Pawtucket. Max Scherzer (10-0, 3.08 ERA) has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the game. Scherzer has allowed more than three runs just once in his last seven starts as he did it on May 15 against Houston. He shut down a very good Baltimore club on Monday at home, holding them to just one run while striking out 10. The Red Sox have struggled lately as their bats were held down by Jeremy Hellickson, Miguel Gonzalez and Chris Tillman. Against good pitching, they just aren’t scoring many runs. They do take advantage of poor pitching but with Scherzer on the mound, expect this to be a low-scoring game. Detroit will score some runs off Webster, but the youngster has now gone back to the minors twice this season and will learn from his last poor outing. He’s never faced the Tigers before and that can be a good thing for him, at least for the first time around the lineup.
