MLB FREE PICK: Take Baltimore. According to latest MLB trends, New York Yankees are: 2-6 last 8 vs. American League East. 1-4 last 5 road games vs. a right-handed starter and 2-9 last 11 vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. Baltimore is: 5-1 last 6 at home in series, 12-2 in Tillman’s last 1 starts with days of rest, 21-8 in Tillman’s last 29 starts and 23-9 last 32 as a home favorite of -110 to -150.
The New York Yankees are in trouble. They opened the series with their best pitcher, C.C. Sabathia on Friday and still lost the game 4-3, going up against lefty spot starter T.J. McFarland, who only lasted 2 2/3 innings. On Saturday, they trotted out David Phelps, he was crushed literally by the Orioles and Chris “Crush” Davis, who hit his 29th home run off of the starter. Davis later hit a home run of Ivan Nova, who the Yankees threw out there because Phelps only lasted 2 1/3 innings. Nova at least saved the bullpen for the Yankees by going 5 2/3 innings. Baltimore is an incredibly dangerous team because they lead the league in home runs and if they get any kind of pitching, they are tough to beat, especially at home. The Orioles send out Chris Tillman to the mound, who just wins. Tillman (9-2, 3.72 ERA) is 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his last three starts. He hasn’t pitched against the Yankees this year and was relegated to the bullpen late last season. But this year, he has been the Orioles most consistent starter along with Miguel Gonzalez. Hiroki Kuroda (7-5, 2.77 ERA) has been good this season but in his last start at Camden Yards on May 22, he allowed five runs in two innings in his worst start of the year. It’s not easy pitching there and on Sunday night baseball with the nation watching, the Orioles will put their stamp on the AL East race with another win over a hapless Yankees’ lineup that desperately needs some punch.
