Mets drop opener
The Mets have lost six of their last eight games following a 7-4 loss on the road to the Cubs on Thursday. New York is 35-40 on the season, 15-26 on the road and 40-28 with the over. Jason Vargas is getting the start for the Mets today. He is 3-3 on the season with a 3.74 ERA.
New York held a 3-0 lead on Thursday night before giving up six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Walker Lockett gave up the six runs in just 2.1 innings of work to take the loss. Pete Alonso continued his strong year at the plate, hitting his 25th home run of the season while driving in two runs while Todd Frazier also had a solo home run.
Cubs look to get on track
Chicago is coming off a 7-4 win in Thursday’s series opener in hopes to get themselves on track. The Cubs are 41-33 on the season, 26-12 at home and 39-34 with the over. Chicago has Yu Darvish getting the start today. He is 2-3 on the season with 4.65 ERA.
The Cubs posted the six runs in the third inning to really spark the win on Thursday night. Javier Baez had a triple and a home run while driving in two to lead the Cubs while Anthony Rizzo also drove in two runs. On the mound, Tyler Chatwood pitched four innings and allowed two runs while Adbert Alzolay got the win in relief by pitching four innings. Steve Cishek got the save by striking out two in the ninth.
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Mets are 6-21 in their last 27 road games and 2-6 in their last eight games against a right-handed starter.
Chicago
The Cubs have won four of Darvish’s last five home starts and 11 of their last 15 against NL East opponents.
Prediction:
The Cubs had one big inning on Thursday, but that may be harder to come by against Vargas, who has been pretty good for the last month. He has allowed just seven earned runs over his last 31 innings on the mound. Darvish has some pretty inflated numbers, but also has been pitching better over the last month. Strangely, his numbers at home are far worse. He has a 5.89 ERA at home and has yet to get a win. Given the Chicago struggles at the plate outside of Thursday and Darvish’s struggles at home, I like the Mets to get the upset today.
MLB Prediction: New York Mets +155
