Mets, Yankees wrap up annual battle
Last night’s Yankees-Mets showdown featured a titanic homer, a near dust-up and accusations of stealing signs. And they said this edition of the Subway Series would lack drama.
Joe Girardi’s club strives to win its second straight over the reigning National League champs today, with a 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch at Yankee Stadium. Oddsmakers at online sports book BetDSI endorse the host team, whereas Terry Collins’ players represent +128 underdogs. The over/under run total sits at 8.5.
Mark Teixeira helped deliver the Yanks a 9-5 triumph roughly 16 hours ago, smacking a three-run dinger in the second. Shortly thereafter, though, lefty Steven Matz nailed the first baseman on the leg and caused both dugouts to empty. That wasn’t enough of a scene for Teixeira, either, as reliever Hansel Robles later accosted him for supposedly peeking at catcher Rene Rivera.
The three-time All-Star laughed off the incidents in the locker room. Nonetheless, he breathed new life into a New York squad searching for inspiration following a tough trade deadline. If Nathan Eovaldi (9-7, 4.70 ERA) can come through soon, the Bronx Bombers will feel demonstrably better about navigating the rest of the regular season without Carlos Beltran, Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman.

In order to get to two games above .500, however, the Yanks must topple Bartolo Colon (9-6, 3.47). The 43-year-old has gone at least six frames in five of his past nine starts, and he recognizes the risk of baiting Teixeira here. Look for the Mets to earn a hard-fought split.
