Nationals blast way to 25 runs
Washington brought out the big bats Tuesday night in a 25-4 home shellacking over New York, putting together a 19-0 lead through five innings and scoring another six runs in the eighth to make it 25-1 at that point. Trea Turner went 4-for-6 with two stolen bases and three runs at the top of the order. Anthony Rendon was 3-for-6 with a double, a walk, two runs and four RBIs. Bryce Harper was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, three runs and two RBIs. Ryan Zimmerman ended the night 2-for-5 with a home run, a walk, two runs and three RBIs. Juan Soto finished 3-for-7 with a double and three runs. Daniel Murphy completed the game 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs and six RBIs. Matt Adams was 1-for-2 with a 2-run homer off the bench. Michael Taylor went 3-for-4 with a triple, two walks and three runs. Matt Wieters was 1-for-4 with two walks, two runs and an RBI. Tanner Roark helped his own cause by going 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and three RBIs. Mark Reynolds added a pinch-hit 3-run homer. Roark earned the win as he allowed one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks over seven innings.
Matz pounded in defeat
Mets starter Steven Matz only lasted two-thirds of an inning last night as he was shelled for seven earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk. New York ended up using seven pitchers, the last of which was position player Jose Reyes as he was crushed to the tune of six earned runs in one inning. Jeff McNeil paced the New York offense by going 1-for-4 with his first career MLB home run, two runs and two RBIs. Austin Jackson was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Luis Guillorme went 1-for-1 with a walk off the bench.
Syndergaard (6-1, 2.89 ERA) starts today for the Mets, while Tommy Milone (0-0, 5.40) gets the call for the Nats.
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Mets are 7-3 in their last 10 road games versus a left-handed starter. New York is 4-9 in its last 13 Wednesday games.
Washington
The Nationals are 6-0 in Milone’s last six starts. Washington is 4-1 in its last five home games versus a team with a losing record.
Prediction:
New York has the better pitcher on the mound here, but Milone has a way of baffling hitters and keeping them off balance with his array of soft toss pitches. Washington is feeling good offensively after yesterday’s outburst and I’d imagine it touches up Syndergaard enough to support Milone to a victory. I wouldn’t be surprised if Syndergaard starts falling into the same rut as fellow pitcher Jacob deGrom in terms of a lack of run support going forward.
