Tanaka benefiting from run support
Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka (4-2, 4.66 ERA), who will get the nod tonight, hasn’t been great his last two starts as he has given up three earned runs over six innings and four earned runs over 5 1/3 frames. Although he got a no-decision in both contests, New York won each by a score of 6-5 in Houston and 9-6 at home versus Boston. He was fantastic the two starts before in giving up only a combined two earned runs over 12 2/3 innings, but he had plenty of room for error with the Yankees winning 14-1 at home against the Twins 11-1 at the Angels. With the New York offense in great form right now, Tanaka only needs to be average on most nights to give his team a great shot to win.
Nationals coming in hot
Washington had been struggling to piece together wins until the decision was made to move Bryce Harper to the leadoff spot a couple weeks ago. While Harper has since slid back to the No. 2 spot in the order behind Trea Turner, the Nats have continued to play good baseball. They are coming off a four-game sweep at Arizona and are 13-2 in their last 15 games. The finale at the Diamondbacks was highlighted by Mark Reynolds, who hit a pair of home runs in his Washington debut during the 6-4 win.
The start for the Nationals tonight goes to Gio Gonzalez (4-2, 2.22), who has allowed only two earned runs over 18 innings in his last two starts with Washington winning two of those games.
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Yankees are 7-1 in their last eight road games. New York is also 7-1 in its last eight interleague games.
Washington
The under is 8-0 in the last eight Nationals interleague games. Washington is 7-1 in its last eight home games.
Prediction:
As good as the Yankees have been lately, Washington has been even better. Gonzalez tends to pitch better against better opponents for some reason and Tanaka is prone to being shaky in any given start. I like the price here with Washington as a home underdog. Only concern is coming off a West Coast road trip, but it did have yesterday off to rest up.
