Padres Ace Needs Win
San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy is on the verge of losing more games by late July than he did all last season.
The
reigning NL Cy Young Award winner looks to avoid his seventh defeat
while trying to continue his dominance over the Cincinnati Reds when
the teams continue their series Tuesday night at Great American
Ballpark.

Things weren’t any better
his last time out, allowing four solo homers and eight hits in seven
innings of a 4-3 loss at St. Louis on Thursday. It was the second time
in his career he allowed four home runs in a game.
"It was just
one of those things. I wasn’t aggressive enough," said Peavy, who
hadn’t allowed a run over 15 straight innings prior to that start.
The
right-hander has a good chance of bouncing back while facing the Reds
(48-53), a club he is 5-0 with a 2.08 ERA in eight career starts
against. Peavy is 3-0 in four starts at Great American Ballpark.
Peavy
looks to help the struggling Padres win two in a row for the first time
since July 4-5 after rallying for a 6-4 win over Cincinnati on Monday
to snap a six-game losing streak.
Kevin Kouzmanoff went 2-for-4
with three RBIs and his two-run double highlighted a three-run ninth
inning off Reds closer Francisco Cordero as San Diego won for the first
time in 54 games when trailing after eight innings.
"Just to come
away with a win is the big thing," said San Diego closer Trevor
Hoffman, who escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his 18th save.
"It doesn’t matter how it happens."
Edgar Gonzalez had three hits, while Scott Hairston and Adrian Gonzalez each had two and drove in a run for San Diego.
Kouzmanoff
is hitting .393 (11-for-28) with nine RBIs in his last seven contests
and .409 (9-for-22) with three homers and seven RBIs in five games
versus Cincinnati this season.
Cordero has 26 saves, but blew his sixth of the season and second in three chances.
"Hitters
and fielders go through tough times, and I am, too, right now," Cordero
said. "I’ve got to do better than that. That’s not my style. That’s not
me."
Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 606th career homer and Edwin
Encarnacion homered for the second straight game and fifth time in nine
contests Monday for the Reds, who have lost two in a row and four of
their last six.
Griffey, who has two homers against San Diego this season, is 2-for-11 with a double lifetime against Peavy.
Johnny
Cueto (7-9, 4.92) looks to rebound from another below average outing
for Cincinnati on Tuesday. He allowed six runs and six hits in 5 1-3
innings, but didn’t factor in the Reds’ 10-8 loss to the New York Mets
on Thursday.
The rookie right-hander, who will make his first
appearance against San Diego, has given up 10 earned runs in 12 innings
over his last two starts.
