Pence and Astros go to arbitration
PHOENIX, AZ (AP) – Outfielder Hunter Pence and the Houston Astros have gone to salary arbitration in the third and final case of the offseason.
The three cases matched the low since the process started in 1974. There were eight cases last year.
The vast majority of the 119 players who filed for arbitration in mid-January settled without hearings.
Pence asked arbitrators Robert Herzog, Margaret Brogan and Fredric Horowitz for $6.9 million during Friday’s hearing. The Astros argued he should be paid $5.15 million.
Pence hit .282 with 25 homers, 91 RBIs and 18 steals last year when he made $3.5 million.
A decision is expected Saturday. Pittsburgh pitcher Ross Ohlendorf won his case this year and Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jered Weaver lost.
