Phillies Season Odds
Can the Philadelphia Phillies defend their World Series crown and make another run in 2009?
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have made the Fightin’ Phils 15/1 long shots to win the 2009 World Series.
Considering the Phillies won the World Series last year and return essentially the same lineup in ’09, they’re quite the value at 15/1 to win the Fall Classic. Oddsmakers have also established Philadelphia’s National League Pennant odds at 5/1.
Perhaps the most important factor in the Phillies’ quest to repeat as World Series champs is the health of Cole Hamels. Philly’s ace missed his first start of the season due to an arm injury, but his long-term health isn’t a question and he should return to the rotation soon.
The Phillies’ offense can’t take a step back this season if they want to repeat. Ryan Howard is still a monster presence in the middle of Philadelphia’s order and he’s surrounded by some of the best talent in baseball in Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley. The Phils will need role players like Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz to produce again like they did last year.
This club is going to have quite the battle in their own division with the Mets, Marlins and Braves expected to be competitive as well. But if Hamels returns to complete health and the offense comes through, there’s no reason to believe that the Phils can’t make another postseason run in 2009.
