Pirates prevail in wild game

Kevin Newman drew a walk-off walk with the bases loaded in the 11th inning Sunday afternoon to propel host Pittsburgh to an 11-10 victory over San Diego. The Padres had scored three runs in the top of the 11th before the Pirates responded with four runs in the bottom half. Newman ended the contest 2-for-6 with a walk, a run and two RBIs. Jose Osuna finished 3-for-6 with a double, a run and an RBI. Bryan Reynolds completed the game 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and two RBIS. Francisco Liriano picked up the win in relief despite allowing three earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks over one inning of work. Trevor Williams starts tonight for Pittsburgh as he enters with a 2-1 record, 4.12 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 49 strikeouts over 59 innings.

Astros snap seven-game skid

Houston ended a seven-game losing streak Sunday afternoon with a 9-4 victory at New York to improve to 49-30 overall and 22-19 on the road. Jose Altuve helped pace the Astros offense as he finished 2-for-5 with a solo home run, a double and two runs scored. Yuli Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs. Tyler White ended the game 1-for-4 with a grand slam. Yordan Alvarez was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Justin Verlander picked up the win as he allowed three earned runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and two walks over seven innings. Cole gets the start today for Houston as he comes in with a 6-5 record, 3.54 ERA and 1.02 WHIP with 148 strikeouts over 96 2/3 innings.

MLB Betting Trends

Pittsburgh

The Pirates are 25-8 in their last 33 interleague games. Pittsburgh is 2-8 in its last 10 road games.

Houston

The Astros are 20-6 in their last 26 Tuesday games. Houston is 0-4 in its last four games versus the NL Central.

Prediction:

Cole faces his former team here and perhaps he will be a little too amped up. Williams was great last season and hasn’t quite been the same this season as he missed time with an injury, but he is still a solid pitcher and usually puts the Pirates in a position to win. The moneyline is so wide and Houston has not played well recently, while Pittsburgh is on a roll. For those reasons, I think taking a shot on Pittsburgh here as a huge dog makes sense.
