Mets’ Syndergaard wields hammer vs. Pirates
Jacob deGrom may be struggling, but the Mets’ other highly touted young righty continues to steamroll the competition.
Manager Terry Collins deploys Noah Syndergaard in tonight’s contest against the Pirates, with a 7:10 p.m. ET first pitch at Citi Field. Oddsmakers at online sports book have installed the hosts as 1.5-run favorites. Pittsburgh, conversely, is a +151 underdog. The over/under run total holds steady at seven.

One day after deGrom dropped his third straight decision, Syndergaard steps up in an effort to snap New York’s three-game skid. The 23-year-old has fanned 95 in 76 2/3 innings, transforming into arguably the organization’s No. 1 hurler. He’s a legitimate threat at the plate, too, with two homers off the Dodgers’ Kenta Maeda in the past month.
Jeff Locke’s probably more concerned with neutralizing the likes of Yoenis Cespedes and Curtis Granderson, though. Pittsburgh’s southpaw got absolutely throttled by Colorado last week, surrendering 11 earned runs in 4 2/3 frames. Prior to that disaster, he had won four in a row.

In spite of injuries galore, the Buccos find themselves within striking distance of the National League’s second wild-card spot. Nonetheless, Clint Hurdle’s troops stand to lose ground in several hours. Syndergaard’s simply too dominant at the moment. Enjoy watching Thor blossom into the protector of the Big Apple.
