Mets’ Collins calls on reserves against Pirates
Manager Terry Collins had his hands tied last night. An improbable band of heroes, however, delivered one of the Mets’ most authoritative victories of 2016.
New York bulldozed Pittsburgh, 11-2, setting up this evening’s rubber match at Citi Field. Oddsmakers at online sports book Bovada.lv think the host club will prevail again, whereas the Pirates are +116 underdogs. The over/under run total rests at 7.5.
With individuals like Wilmer Flores, Kelly Johnson and Matt Reynolds leading the way, the Mets just amassed a season-high 19 base knocks. It helped that Noah Syndergaard owned the Buccos (33-32), too, as the righty struck out 11. Bartolo Colon (5-3, 3.08 ERA) obviously doesn’t possess the supernatural stuff of his younger teammate, but the 43-year old remains effective all the same. In his previous start, Colon permitted one run on eight hits and no walks while fanning two in a 5-2 triumph vs. the Brewers.
Clint Hurdle counters with Juan Nicasio (5-5, 5.34). Nearly a week ago, the righty was summoned from the bullpen during Pittsburgh’s 12-inning defeat to the Cardinals. He surrendered six runs in his first relief appearance since Oct. 4.

Nicascio may have to contend with Neil Walker, among others, in several hours. New York’s second baseman is nearing a return to the lineup following a bout with back soreness. Collins knows, though, that his ancillary pieces can be called upon if needed. Look for the dinged-up Mets (35-29) to hold serve at home.
