Red Sox unlikely to pursue Scherzer
BOSTON, MA (The Spread) – According to a Boston report the Red Sox will not be pursuing the biggest free agent name still left on the MLB market.
A major league source familiar with the Red Sox’s thinking told Rob Bradford of WEEI that the club is unlikely to make a serious run at free agent pitcher Max Scherzer. While the Red Sox are in need of a true ace after losing out in the Jon Lester sweepstakes, Bradford’s source believes that Boston is merely being used as leverage in some reports that have connected Scherzer with the Sox.
CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that the Tigers, Giants, Dodgers, Blue Jays, Cubs, Cardinals and Angels could be on Scherzer’s list of potential suitors. The 30-year-old posted a 3.15 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 220 1/3 innings this past season for Detroit.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Red Sox are 9/1 to win the 2015 World Series, putting them just behind the Dodgers, who are favored at 15/2 to win next year’s Fall Classic.
