Ross navigates through six innings
Tyson Ross allowed an RBI double from Pittsburgh first baseman Josh Bell in the bottom of the first inning, but avoided further damage. Another RBI double off the bat of Corey Dickerson made it a 2-0 game in the third, but Ross settled in after that. He went on to allow two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks over six innings, long enough to watch the Padres rally from behind. Ross improves to 3-3 on the season and his ERA sits at 3.35. Brad Hand threw the final 1 1/3 innings to secure his 13th save. Dickerson was 2-for-5 for the Pirates, while rookie Austin Meadows finished 2-for-4.
Clayton Richard (2-5, 5.20 ERA) draws the start for San Diego.
Hosmer sparks offense
San Diego first baseman Eric Hosmer ended the night 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles plus two runs and an RBI. He also walked once. Travis Jankowski finished 2-for-4 with a run, Franchy Cordero was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Jankowski and Corey Spangenberg both stole a base. Pirates starter Ivan Nova surrendered three runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks over six innings to take the loss.
Nick Kingham (2-0, 2.92 ERA) will start today for Pittsburgh.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are 5-16 in their last 21 games following a win. The under is 7-3 in the last 10 San Diego games overall.
Pittsburgh
The Pirates are 8-2 in their last 10 games overall. Pittsburgh is 8-3 in its last 11 home games versus the Padres.
Prediction:
San Diego stole one Friday night, but it is still a team that struggles a lot offensively and the Pirates have the better pitcher on the mound in this one. I like Pittsburgh to bounce back here.
