The Arizona Diamondbacks have dropped five of their last six games, but still hold a half-game lead in the NL West standings. Will Arizona begin to trend back in the right direction tonight as it opens a home series with the San Diego Padres?

Padres enter on three-game losing skid
San Diego has lost three in a row including the last two in Oakland, falling 4-2 on Wednesday. Christian Villanueva finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in the loss. Freddy Galvis was also 2-for-4 with a double. Wil Myers went 0-for-2, but drew two walks. Jose Castillo took the loss in relief as he gave up one earned run on no hits with one strikeout and one walk in two-thirds of an inning.
Diamondbacks falter late vs. Cards
Arizona led 2-1 through six innings Wednesday night, but a five-run top of the seventh by St. Louis sent the D-backs to an 8-4 loss. Arizona dropped two of three in the series. Yoshihisa Hirano suffered the loss as he allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits with no strikeouts or walks in two-thirds of an inning of relief. Jon Jay went 3-for-5 with a run to help key the offense. Paul Goldschmidt drew two walks in five plate appearances. Jake Lamb finished 1-for-4 with a walk, a run and an RBI. Daniel Descalso was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.
Eric Lauer (3-5, 5.08 ERA) will start today for San Diego, while Arizona counters with Shelby Miller (0-2, 11.42).
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are 1-7 in their last eight Thursday games. San Diego is 3-13 in its last 16 overall.
Arizona
The Diamondbacks are 20-6 in their last 26 Thursday games. Arizona is 1-7 in its last eight home games.
Prediction:
Arizona ran into a tough series with the Cardinals, but the good news is a struggling San Diego squad could be the right medicine to turn things around. The bad news is Miller has looked awful in his first two MLB starts since returning from Tommy John surgery. I think Miller should be better here against a poor offense and his feel should improve in start three. I’m going to bet on the D-backs to get back on the winning track tonight.
