Myers, Hedges spark Padres win
San Diego doubled up the host D-backs by a final of 6-3 Thursday night in the series opener. Carlos Asuaje finished 2-for-2 with a triple, two walks, two runs and an RBI to help pace the offense. Wil Myers went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run and two RBIs. Austin Hedges was 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Hedges’ solo homer gave San Diego a 2-1 lead in the fifth, while a three-run sixth was sparked by Myers’ two-run triple. Eric Lauer earned the win as he allowed one earned run on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks over five innings. Brad Hand worked around a hit and struck out three batters in the ninth to record his 24th save.
Miller struggles again
Arizona starting pitcher Shelby Miller was better than he was in his first two starts coming off Tommy John surgery, but still was hit hard as he gave up five runs (three earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks over 5 1/3 innings. Jon Jay was 2-for-4 to help lead the D-backs offense, while Nick Ahmed went 2-for-5. A.J. Pollock was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Ketel Marte finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs.
Joey Lucchesi (4-3, 3.26 ERA) gets the start today for the Padres, while Arizona turns to Zack Godley (9-6, 5.07).
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are 4-13 in their last 17 games overall. San Diego is 5-12 in its last 17 meetings in Arizona.
Arizona
The Diamondbacks are 1-8 in their last nine home games. The under is 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings.
Prediction:
Godley has struggled with consistency all season, but his win-loss record speaks to the run support he is getting despite the bloated ERA. I’m going to hop right back on the Arizona train tonight as San Diego struggles offensively and I certainly don’t see the visitors scoring another six runs here. Look for Arizona to get back on track as Godley turns in one of his better starts.
