Padres end win streak
San Diego had a four-game win streak come to an end on Friday night in a 2-1 loss to the Pirates. The Padres are 38-38 overall, 17-18 on the road and 37-34 with the over. San Diego has Chris Paddack taking the mound today. He is 4-4 on the season with a 3.15 ERA.
Friday was a pitching battle, as the two combined for just three runs on 13 hits. San Diego had Eric Lauer get the start and he went seven strong innings, but still took the loss. Lauer allowed one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts. He is 5-7 on the season. Manny Machado hit his 45th home run of the season to drive in the lone run. Francisco Mejia was the lone Padre with two hits.
Pirates get back-to-back wins
Pittsburgh kicked its alternating streak on Friday by winning a second straight game on Friday night. The Pirates are now 34-40 on the season, 15-19 at home and 44-28 with the over. Pittsburgh has Chris Archer getting the start today. He is 3-6 on the season with a 5.85 ERA.
Joe Musgrove got the win on the mound for Pittsburgh. He pitched seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits with eight strikeouts. Felipe Vazquez got the save with a scoreless ninth. Starling Marte and Jose Osuna each drove in a run to lead the Pirates at the plate.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are 2-6 in their last eight road games and 0-5 in their last five against losing teams.
Pittsburgh
The Pirates are 4-1 in their last five home games and 3-8 in their last 11 games against a right-handed starter.
Prediction:
Paddack has allowed 13 runs over his last 14.1 innings and he has not been strong on the road. Despite a 2.50 home ERA, Paddack has a 3.94 road ERA. Archer has been a mess in his own right, allowing at least four runs in seven of his last eight starts. However, his home ERA is 4.15, which is much better than 8.42 on the road. Archer may be able to have a stronger showing against a San Diego team that has struggled to produce runs consistently. I don’t love it, but I am going to make my chances on Pittsburgh grinding out the win at home.
MLB Prediction: Pittsburgh Pirates +110
