Giants-Cardinals bout closes out weekend
At age 35, Jake Peavy won’t be mistaken for Madison Bumgarner or Johnny Cueto anytime soon. Yet the veteran hurler is performing just fine at the back end of the Giants’ rotation.
Peavy receives a primetime showcase in tonight’s tilt vs. the Cardinals, with an 8:05 p.m. ET first pitch at Busch Stadium. For the first time in the series, oddsmakers prefer the host squad. Online sports book BetDSI lists St. Louis as a 1.5-run favorite, while the NL West stalwarts are +140 underdogs. The over/under run figure stands at 8.5.

The Peavy renaissance arrives on the heels of an ugly first month-plus. Since May 10, however, the former Cy Young winner boasts a 2.96 ERA. Peavy faced the minimum number of hitters over seven innings in Tuesday’s 4-0 triumph at Atlanta.
Mike Matheny counters with Carlos Martinez, who seemingly recaptured his groove at Milwaukee. The flame-throwing righty fanned eight and walked one across eight frames earlier in the week. He’s only made one start against San Francisco, though, and that occurred in July 2014.

St. Louis staged an impressive comeback victory roughly 18 hours ago that should provide a sizable confidence boost moving forward. The hot-hitting Matt Carpenter and Aledmys Diaz aren’t likely to be daunted by Peavy’s repertoire, and the Giants’ bullpen already absorbed several blows in the middle contest. All signs point toward the Cards to claim the finale, too.
