Goldschmidt homers in win
St. Louis scored a combined six runs in the eighth and ninth innings before holding off a rally attempt by host Atlanta as it prevailed 7-6 in Game 1 of the NLDS. Paul Goldschmidt helped lead the Cardinals offense as he finished 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a double, a walk and two runs scored. Marcell Ozuna went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and two runs. Kolten Wong was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Carlos Martinez recorded the win in relief despite giving up three earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk over 1 1/3 innings. Jack Flaherty gets the start today as he enters with an 11-7 record, 2.75 ERA and 0.97 WHIP plus 231 strikeouts across 196 1/3 innings pitched.
Braves falter late
Atlanta mounted a furious comeback, but only after blowing a late lead Thursday as it fell 7-6 at home to St. Louis in Game 1 of the NLDS. Ronald Acuna Jr. helped lead the Braves offensively as he finished 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a walk and two RBIs. Freddie Freeman was 2-for-4 with a solo homer. Dansby Swanson ended the contest 1-for-4 with an RBI. Mark Melancon suffered the loss in relief as he gave up four earned runs on five hits with one strikeout and two walks over one inning. Mike Foltynewicz starts today for Atlanta as he comes in with an 8-6 record, 4.54 ERA and 1.25 WHIP plus 105 strikeouts over 117 innings of work.
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 7-2 in their last nine road games. St. Louis is 1-6 in its last seven playoff road games.
Atlanta
The Braves are 0-4 in their last four games overall. Atlanta is 36-17 in its last 53 home games.
Prediction:
Flaherty has been lights out in the second half of the season and I trust him considerably more than Foltynewicz, who has the ability to be dominant but was slowed by injury this season and struggles with his command plus giving up home runs. I think the Cardinals will send the Braves’ fans home disappointed for a second straight day.
