Cards’ Wainwright to find old form vs. ATL?
The Cardinals’ offensive slumber appears to be a thing of the past. Can ace Adam Wainwright, though, regain his past form on the rubber?
Visiting St. Louis certainly feels that way as it shoots to sweep the downtrodden Braves. Online sports book Bovada.lv likes the Redbirds to capture their third in a row, installing them as 1.5-run favorites this afternoon.
Mike Matheny’s club plated seven runs and totaled 17 hits while being battered by the Pirates, but the fortunes have changed at Turner Field. Last night’s 12-2 rout came on the heels of a three-homer performance in Friday’s series opener. Everybody’s getting in on the action, too. Second baseman Kolten Wong is 6 for his last 15 and holds a career average of .378 vs. Atlanta.
Wainwright, of course, would gladly accept more of the same production beginning at 1:35 p.m. ET. The Cards’ No. 1 hurler allowed three runs, six hits and issued three free passes over six innings of a 4-1 defeat one week ago. It marked Wainwright’s first starting assignment in almost a year. (A torn Achilles limited the three-time All-Star to seven outings in 2015.)

He shouldn’t have a ton of trouble refining that patented command against Fredi Gonzalez’s group. As the only winless squad in the senior circuit, Atlanta’s hitting .167 with 35 strikeouts in four contests. Veteran leaders Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis are a combined 5 for 27. Oh, and there’s the little fact that the staff ERA sits at 8.00 for the series. Bank on St. Louis sending the Braves to their worst start in nearly three decades.
