Can Cards snag rubber match from Padres?
St. Louis’ all-or-nothing offense leaned toward the former last night, but will Mike Matheny’s crew be able to follow up with a stellar outing in today’s series finale vs. San Diego?
The Cardinals and Padres meet at 4:40 p.m. ET, with the visitors listed as 1.5-run favorites. Oddsmakers at online sports book BetDSI list the over/under run total at 7.5.
Aledmys Diaz, Jeremy Hazelbaker and the rest of the gang had no trouble reaching double digits in the middle contest. The Cards (9-8) throttled Andy Green’s bunch, 11-2, behind a 5-for-5 evening for Diaz and Hazelbaker’s huge homer in the seventh inning. Michael Wacha overcame four walks to record his second victory.
This afternoon, Mike Leake (0-2, 5.71 ERA) takes the hill in search of win No. 1 on the campaign. The veteran righty has permitted four runs in each of his first three starts for the Redbirds. He did, however, subdue San Diego (7-11) as a member of the Giants in 2015.

On the flip side, the Padres turn to Colin Rea (1-1, 5.51), who gave up three runs in Tuesday’s 5-4 triumph over Pittsurgh. He’ll have to keep serious tabs on the hot-hitting Stephen Piscotty. The St. Louis right fielder is 6 for 13 with three extra-base knocks in the past three games. Bank on Piscotty getting a great deal of help from his friends, though, as the Cardinals aim to climb the NL Central standings.
