Machado hits two longballs
Manny Machado just about single-handedly carried the O’s to a 9-4 victory Friday night at home against the Rays as he smashed two home runs including a seventh-inning grand slam that helped pad the Baltimore advantage. The Orioles led 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh and then added five runs in the frame thanks in large part to the grand slam by Machado. He had earlier given Baltimore a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run. His second homer was Machado’s 12th of the season. He finished the contest 2-for-4 with the two home runs and six RBIs. Mark Trumbo and Chance Sisco also homered. Kevin Gausman scattered 11 hits over 7 1/3 innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out six to pick up the win. Brad Brach earned his fifth save, throwing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball.
In Saturday’s doubleheader, Baltimore has tabbed David Hess to make his MLB debut in the opener with Alex Cobb (0-4, 7.61 ERA) going in the second game.
Rays leave 10 on base
Tampa Bay racked up 15 hits in Friday’s loss, with eight of the nine starters getting at least one hit and seven different players with two hits each. Regardless, the Rays only managed to put four runs on the board. Carlos Gomez led the way as he was 2-for-4 with a triple, a run and two RBIs. Adeimy Hechavarria was 2-for-4 with a double, while Denard Span went 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Matt Duffy finished 2-for-5 with a run and Brad Miller was 2-for-4 with a run. Jacob Faria surrendered seven earned runs in six innings to be saddled with the loss.
Chris Archer (2-2 5.32 ERA) will start the first game of the doubleheader for the Rays. He has struggled to put it together this season despite his immense talent, but Archer was strong in his last outing as he gave up one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks over seven innings in a 2-1 home loss to Toronto. A starter for the second game has not yet been announced by the Rays. Matt Andriese (3.92 ERA), 20 2/3 IP) will go in Game 2.
MLB Betting Odds
Tampa Bay
The under is 6-2 in the last eight Archer starts on a Saturday. Tampa Bay is 5-12 in its last 17 Saturday games.
Baltimore
The Orioles are 14-46 in their last 60 games overall. Baltimore is 0-11 in its last 11 Saturday games.
Prediction
I like the Rays in both games here. Archer appears to have figured some stuff out his last start, while Andriese plus the bullpen are a better bet in Game 2 than Cobb turning a gem. The Rays offense should turn more of those hits into runs today.
