Tigers’ Leyland not a lame duck
DETROIT, MI (AP) – The Detroit Tigers hope newcomers Victor Martinez, Brad Penny and Joaquin Benoit will help holdovers such as Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander and Austin Jackson put the franchise in the postseason for the first time since 2006.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland and general manager Dave Dombrowski might have a lot to lose if that doesn’t happen. Both are entering the final year of their contracts.
Leyland insists that fact doesn’t intimidate or worry him. Dombrowski says he’s not interested in discussing the topic.
The Tigers started their winter tour across the state Thursday – just a few weeks before catchers and pitchers are due to report in Florida for spring training.
