Tigers sign Justin Upton
The Detroit Tigers are looking to make a push for the 2016 World Series, as they signed Justin Upton to a 6-year contract on Monday night.
News broke on the Tigers reaching a six-year, $132.75 million deal with Upton on Monday night. The contract has an opt-out close for Upton after year No. 2. The 8-year vet of MLB is coming off a 2015 season that wasn’t one of his best. Playing for the Padres, Upton hit just .251 with 26 HR and 81 RBI. However, he had a 4.4 WAR and for his career he is a .271 hitter with 190 home runs and 616 RBI.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, the Tigers are currently listed with 25/1 odds to win the World Series, which would be their first since 1984. The Chicago Cubs are still a 9/2 favorite while the San Francisco Giants sit at 6/1. The Boston Red Sox have the shortest odds of any AL team, as they have 8/1 odds.
Upton now joins the likes of Miguel Cabrera, J.D. Martinez, Victor Martinez and Ian Kinsler in the Tigers’ lineup. Detroit also added Jordan Zimmerman to the pitching rotation this offseason to join Justin Verlander and Anibal Sanchez. With a lot of aging veterans on this roster, they seem to be pushing hard to win a title this season, knowing their window for a championship is closing.
