Updated 2012 NL Pennant Odds
(The Spread) – As we sit here at the All-Star break, two teams are currently favored to win the 2012 National League Pennant.
The San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals are both 9/2, respectively, to win the 2012 National League Pennant. The Cincinnati Reds are 11/2, while the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers are both 7/1, respectively. The defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals are 8/1 to win the pennant again this season.
Continuing with the odds, the surprising Pittsburgh Pirates are 12/1, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies are 14/1, respectively, while the Miami Marlins and New York Mets are 16/1, respectively. The disappointing Milwaukee Brewers are 30/1 to win this year’s pennant while the Colorado Rockies and Houston Astros are 150/1, respectively. The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres are long shots at 200/1 to win, respectively.
It’s somewhat surprising that the Giants are one of the favorites to win the pennant considering they’re not even winning their own division right now. At 46-40, the Giants are a half-game back of the Dodgers, who are 47-40. The Nationals currently have the best record in the NL at 49-34, while the Pirates are a game ahead of the Reds in the NL Central at 48-37.
Thus far, the National League has been littered with surprise teams. Baseball analysts have been waiting for the Nationals to explode for years and finally they’re putting it all together thanks to a pitching staff that ranks first in ERA (3.20), first in WHIP (1.20) and first in opponent batting average (.231).
The Pirates, of course, have been the other surprise but they were 47-43 at the All-Star break last year and wound up finishing 18 games below .500. Thus, the jury remains out on them.
