Nationals take opener
Washington has won five of its last six and three straight thanks to a 9-3 win over the Cubs on Friday. The Nationals have outscored opponents 27-5 in their last three games. Washington is 71-57 on the season, 35-31 on the road and 62-60 with the under. The Nationals have Joe Ross on the mound today. He is 3-3 on the season with a 5.48 ERA.
The Nationals took it right to the Cubs from the first inning, as they scored in four of the first five innings of play on Friday. Juan Soto had three hits, including his 29th home run, and scored four runs to lead Washington at the plate. Adam Eaton also homered while Victor Robles had two hits and two RBI. Anibal Sanchez had an amazing start, going 8.1 innings and allowing just one earned run on one hit to move to 8-6 on the season.
Cubs end win streak
Chicago had its five-game win streak come to an end on Friday in the loss to the Nationals at home. The Cubs are now 69-59 overall, 44-20 at home and 65-58 with the under. Jose Quintana is taking the mound today. He is 11-7 on the season with a 3.91 ERA.
Jon Lester got touched up for six runs over 4.1 innings on Friday to fall to 10-9 on the season. At the plate, the Cubs finished with three hits for their three runs. Nicholas Castellanos had two of the three hits and drove in a run while Anthony Rizzo also drove in a run.
MLB Betting Trends
Washington
The Nationals are 11-2 in their last 13 games against NL Central opponents and they have won four straight against left-handed starters.
Chicago
The Cubs are 6-2 in their last eight Saturday games and 25-9 in their last 34 home games against a winning team.
Prediction:
Quintana has pitched very well as of late. He has given up two earned runs over his last 20 innings. Ross is trying to lower his ERA and has given up just one earned run over his last 21.1 innings on the mound. He actually carries a 3.41 ERA on the road. Despite that, I think the Cubs are too strong at home to get beat up two straight by the Nats. Washington’s pitching was too strong on Friday, but the Cubs are eventually going to mash the ball at Wrigley.
MLB Prediction: Chicago Cubs -145
