Nationals vs. Mets Prediction
The inconsistent Washington Nationals are a .500 team through 92 games and 5.5 games back of first place in the NL East. Will ace Max Scherzer help Washington trend in the right direction tonight as it opens a series at the division foe New York Mets?

Nats shut out on five hits
Washington has now lost three of four including two of the last three at Pittsburgh after a 2-0 loss Wednesday afternoon. The only extra base hit came via a double by pitcher Gio Gonzalez. Four other Nationals hitters had a single apiece – Adam Eaton, Anthony Rendon, Wilmer Difo and Brian Goodwin. Gonzalez suffered the loss as he allowed two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk over six innings.
Nimmo walks it off for Mets
Pinch hitter Brandon Nimmo broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 10th inning Wednesday afternoon with a 3-run homer to give the Mets a thrilling 3-0 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. The win salvaged a series split of the four-game set. Jacob deGrom took a no-decision as he threw eight shutout innings, giving up five hits while striking out seven and walking one. Robert Gsellman threw one inning of scoreless relief to earn the win, working around a hit and a walk. Amed Rosario was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run to help pace New York.
Max Scherzer (11-5, 2.33 ERA) draws the start for the Nationals tonight, while New York counters with Steven Matz (4-6, 3.31).
MLB Betting Trends
Washington
The Nationals are 9-19 versus left-handed starters this season. Washington is 25-10 on the road when the total is set at 7 runs or less the last three seasons.
New York
The Mets are 17-30 in home games this season. New York is 25-35 in night games this season.
Prediction:
Washington can’t seem to put it together and even Scherzer hasn’t been great lately, but New York could be the right antidote. The Mets have struggled mightily at home and have a weak offense. While lefties have stymied the Nats at times, they should score enough off Matz to support what I believe will be a top-notch outing from Scherzer. Washington needs to put a winning streak together and it might start here.
