Pitching for Los Angeles will be Tyler Skaggs (2-6, 4.30 ERA), while Houston counters with Lance McCullers (7-3, 3.97). Skaggs has a 1.37 ERA with 66 strikeouts over 75 1/3 innings. He gave up two earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk over 5 1/3 innings in a 6-3 home loss to Cleveland his last start. He carries a 3.93 ERA in 36 2/3 road innings. McCullers returns to the Astros rotation after missing two-and-a-half weeks with an injury. He has a 1.27 WHIP with 122 strikeouts in 111 innings. He allowed three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk in 5 1/3 innings during a 5-3 win at the Mariners on September 6. McCullers holds a 4.78 ERA in 64 road innings.
The Angels come in with a 76-78 record and are 35-41 on the road, while the Astros are 95-59 and 48-32 at home. Houston has won seven of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone under six times.
On Saturday, the Astros won their second straight in the series with a 6-2 victory. Marwin Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs. Carlos Correa was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run and three RBIs. Evan Gattis hit a three-run homer. Charlie Morton allowed one earned run and struck out five over seven innings to get the win. Justin Upton was 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs to provide the Los Angeles offense. Bud Norris gave up one earned run over 3 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Skaggs has proven to be very hittable the last couple months and everyone knows the Astros have a very potent offense. McCullers will almost certainly be on a strict pitch count and will be shaking off some rust. He has to deal with some strong bats in the Angels lineup as well, including arguably the best hitter in the game in Mike Trout. We like the over here.
