R.A. Dickey (8-8, 4.06 ERA) gets the starts for Atlanta, while Philadelphia gives the start to Mark Leiter (2-3, 3.86). Dickey has a 1.39 WHIP with 111 strikeouts in 153 innings. He has a 4.59 ERA on the road in 11 starts. He gave up four earned runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts in a 9-6 home loss to Seattle his last time out. Leiter has a 1.20 WHIP in 21 appearances (five starts). He has 51 strikeouts in 58 1/3 innings. In his last start, Leiter threw seven one-hit innings with five strikeouts in an 8-0 home win over Miami.
Atlanta is 57-72 on the season with a 28-36 road record, while Philadelphia is 49-81 and 28-35 at home. The Phillies have won the last seven meetings and eight of the last 10. The total has gone under in seven of those games.
The Phillies won Monday’s series opener by a 6-1 score as Aaron Nola threw seven innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts. Rhys Hoskins was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Pedro Florimon was 2-for-4 with a run. Cameron Rupp hit a home run, drew a walk and had two RBIs. Brandon Phillips was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Braves, while Ender Inciarte added two hits. Lucas Sims allowed four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings to take the loss.
The Phillies have had the Braves’ number, but expect it to end here. There are a lot of young hitters in the Philadelphia lineup who don’t have as much experience hitting a knuckleball. Leiter has been pitching well, but expect some regression after the gem his last time out. Braves are a good play in this spot.
