Pitching for Chicago will be Jake Arrieta (14-9, 3.43 ERA), while Carlos Martinez (12-11, 3.63) will be on the hill for the Cardinals. Arrieta has a 1.20 WHIP with 159 strikeouts in 165 1/3 innings. He allowed one earned run on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk over five innings in a 5-3 win at the Brewers. Arrieta has a 3.72 ERA in 19 road starts. Martinez holds a 1.21 WHIP with 211 strikeouts in 200 2/3 innings. He gave up four earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and one walk over 6 1/3 innings in an 8-5 win at the Reds his last start. Martinez has a 3.18 WHIP in 14 home starts.
The Cubs enter with a 88-68 record and is 42-36 on the road, while the Cardinals are 81-75 and 42-33 at home. The Cubs have won nine of the last 10 meetings including the last six. The over-under is 4-5-1 in those games.
Monday’s series opener saw the Cubs claim a 10-2 victory. Kris Bryant went 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk and two runs to lead the way. Ben Zobrist was 2-for-4 with two runs. Addison Russell was 1-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs. Javier Baez was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Jon Lester gave up one earned run and struck out four in six innings to get the win. Dexter Fowler was 2-for-4 for the Cardinals. Jedd Gyorko finished 3-for-3 with a home run. Luke Weaver allowed eight earned runs in three innings to take the loss.
The Cardinals cannot seem to solve the Cubs and now only have six more games left to make up 2.5 games in the race for the second NL Wild Card spot. We think Martinez will be on his ‘A’ game here as he seems to pitch most of his best games at home. Arrieta has only had one start back since missing two-and-a-half weeks and might still not be quite on top of his game. We like St. Louis at home to finally beat its rivals once again.
