Staff ace Clayton Kershaw (16-3, 2.15 ERA) will take the mound for the Dodgers, while the Giants counter with Johnny Cueto (7-7, 4.43). Kershaw has a 0.90 WHIP with 182 strikeouts over 151 innings. He was hit hard his last start, allowing four earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks over 3 2/3 innings in a 9-1 home loss to the Rockies. Kershaw has a sparkling 1.45 ERA in 10 road starts this year. Cueto holds a 1.37 WHIP with 112 strikeouts in 126 innings. He allowed one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts and a walk over five innings in an 11-3 win at Colorado. Cueto has a 4.26 ERA in nine home starts this year.
Los Angeles now sports a 92-52 record overall and 40-29 on the road after Monday night’s 8-6 loss at the Giants, its 16th loss in 17 games and 11th straight defeat. The losing streak is the longest since the Dodgers moved to LA. San Francisco comes in at 57-89 and is 33-38 at home. The two teams have split the last 10 meetings and the total has gone over six times.
On Monday night, the game did not begin due to weather until 1:50AM EST (10:50PM PST) due to a rain delay. The contest took three hours and 22 minutes to complete. Hunter Pence was 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs and an RBI to lead the Giants. Denard Span was 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two runs and three RBIs. Buster Posey finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Jarrett Parker added a solo home run. Derek Law notched the win in relief, while Sam Dyson picked up his 13th save. Yasiel Puig was 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored for Los Angeles. Corey Seager was 1-for-4 with a walk, a run and two RBIs. Justin Turner finished 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI. Yasmani Grandal walked three times and scored a run. Pedro Baez suffered the loss in relief.
The Dodgers have to win a game at some point, right? Their only victory in the last 17 games is when Kershaw returned from the disabled list and they beat the Padres 1-0 in San Diego all the way back on September 1. It’s time for Kershaw to give an A-plus performance we’ve seen time and time again from him. Los Angeles needs this. It’s way too good of a team to be struggling this badly for this long. Plus, the Giants are having a lousy year and shouldn’t be taking down arguably the best pitcher in baseball. Take Los Angeles on the run line.
