On the mound for the Rockies will be rookie German Marquez (10-7, 4.41 ERA), while the Giants turn to Johnny Cueto (7-8, 4.58). Marquez has a 1.37 WHIP with 137 strikeouts in 145 innings. He surrendered four earned runs on 11 hits with one strikeout and no walks over 3 2/3 innings his last start, an 8-2 loss at the Diamondbacks. He has a 4.20 ERA on 70 2/3 road innings. Cueto holds a 1.41 WHIP with 120 strikeouts in 129 2/3 innings. He gave up four earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and four walks over 3 2/3 innings in a 5-3 home loss to the Dodgers. He has a 4.60 ERA in 60 2/3 home innings.
Colorado comes in with an 82-68 record and is 39-36 on the road, while San Francisco is 58-93 and 34-43 at home. The Rockies have won six of the last 10 meetings and the over-under is 5-4-1.
Over the weekend, Colorado won two out of three at home versus the Padres but dropped the finale 4-3. Trevor Story was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. D.J. LeMahieu finished 2-for-4, while Gerardo Parra was 2-for-4 with a double plus a run and an RBI. Greg Holland suffered the loss in relief. The Giants snapped a four-game losing streak with a 7-2 win Sunday at home over the Diamondbacks. Pablo Sandoval was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs to key the offense. Joe Panik was 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Austin Slater went 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs and an RBI. Jarrett Parker was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Chris Stratton allowed two earned runs over six innings to garner the win.
Marquez has not been good in his last several starts and some might point to arm fatigue, but his velocity seems to be holding strong. The Giants can be a cure for any pitcher’s ills and we’re going to believe that will be the case again. Cueto is having a down year and the Rockies should be able to touch him up for enough offense to ride it to victory.
