Mark Leiter Jr. (2-4, 3.88 ERA) draws the start for Philadelphia, while Rafael Montero (3-9, 5-12) will be on the mound for New York. Leiter has a 1.23 WHIP over 22 appearances (six starts) with 57 strikeouts over 65 innings. He has a 6.03 ERA in 31 1/3 road innings. In his last start, Leiter allowed three earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and one walk over 6 2/3 innings in a 5-2 home loss to the Braves. Montero carries a 1.68 WHIP with 92 strikeouts over 91 1/3 innings. He is coming off his best start of the season as he threw 8 1/3 shutout innings in a 2-0 win at the Reds, striking out eight and walk four while giving up three hits.
Philadelphia has a 52-84 record and is 24-47 on the road, while New York is 58-78 and 28-39 at home. The Mets have won six of the last 10 meetings, while the total has gone over six times.
The Phillies won three out of four on the road at Miami, taking the series finale Sunday by a count of 3-1 in 12 innings. Nick Williams broke the game open in the top of the 12th with a two-run single. Cesar Hernandez was 2-for-5 with a walk, a run and an RBI. Freddy Galvis went 2-for-6. Adam Morgan earned the win with three hitless innings of relief. Hector Neris picked up his 19th save.
Montero was fantastic his last start, but with the way he’s pitched all season it definitely feels like an anomaly. Rhys Hoskins might be out of the lineup again Monday afternoon, but the Phillies are going to New York with a little confidence after the showing in Miami. Leiter has been solid in most of his starts and he’ll be facing a subpar lineup here.
