Today’s pitching matchup has Mike Pelfrey (0-3, 5.21 ERA) on the mound for the Sox to face Jesse Chavez (2-5, 4.29) of the Athletics. Pelfrey has not had a good season at all, lasting just 19 innings over four starts with 11 earned runs and 20 hits allowed. His WHIP is 1.42. Chavez has seven starts this year, allowing 20 earned runs over 42 innings of work. He has 35 strikeouts with 15 walks and a WHIP of 1.29.
The White Sox make a trip out West after winning two straight at home over the Padres. Chicago is now 17-18 overall, 9-10 on the road and 17-15 with the under. The Sox are averaging 4.17 runs per game while allowing 3.97. Avisail Garcia has been leading Chicago with a .344 average, six home runs and 25 RBI. Leury Garcia is adding a .307 average with four homers and 14 RBI.
The Angels salvaged a four-game split at home with the Detroit Tigers this weekend. Los Angeles is now 19-21 overall, 12-8 at home and 22-15 with the under. L.A. is putting up 3.78 runs per game while allowing 4.18 per contest. Mike Trout continues to put up amazing numbers. He is hitting .352 with 11 homers, 10 doubles and 26 RBI. Yunel Escobar is adding five homers and 17 RBI, but has been put on the DL with a hamstring injury that could see him miss up to a month.
Looking at Pelfrey’s ERA, you would expect a high-scoring game, but I think it is a bit of a red herring. Pelfrey has actually not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his starts this year. He is pulled too quickly for the game to really get out of hand. Chicago actually has a pretty sound bullpen as well, so I think that group can keep the Angels from putting up a big number. Chicago’s lineup isn’t lighting the world on fire either. I think Chavez will navigate through them effectively and keep this game below the total.
