Will the Cincinnati Reds get to 71 wins? MLB Predictions 3/21/17

Reds Win Total Prediction

Is there any reason to have some optimism about the Cincinnati Reds for the 2017 season? Here’s our breakdown on their season.

According to oddsmakers at BetDSI, the Reds over/under for wins in 2017 has been set at 70.5. The over carries a +100 betting line while the under is listed at -130. Their odds to win the 2017 World Series are listed at 350/1 currently, while their odds to win the NLCS sit at 150/1.

The Reds are coming off a 68-94 record in 2016. Bryan Price returns for his fourth season as manager despite posting just a 208-278 record in his three seasons with the team. He has yet to put up a winning season with the team and has had less than 70 wins over the last two years.

The Reds have some reasonable hits, led by Joey Votto, who will be the team leader once again. Votto had 29 home runs with 97 RBI last season while hitting an impressive .326. Adam Duvall is also back after putting up 33 home runs with 103 RBI, but he hit just .241. They were the only players on the roster with more than 70 RBI on the season. The team also has Billy Hamilton, who had 58 stolen bases a season ago.

The pitching staff wasn’t much to like last season. They had a 4.91 ERA as a staff in 2016. Dan Straily was 14-8 with a 3.76 ERS to lead the group, but he is now with the Marlins. Brandon Finnegan is the top returning arm, as he was 10-11 last season with a 3.98 ERA and 145 strikeouts. Tony Cingrani led the bullpen with 17 saves and a 4.14 ERA. The team added Scott Feldman in the offseason, but he had just a 3.97 ERA last season over 77 innings with the Blue Jays and Astros.

Bet on MLB Futures Odds

There really isn’t much to like about the Reds. They made some changes in the front office but are sticking with Price. He’s certainly not a good enough manager to overcome the lack of talent this roster has. Add to that the Reds compete in the highly-competitive NL Central that has three potential playoff teams, and I just don’t see them making a run to 70 wins this season.
